Level 1 Class – Mondays

Welcome to the formal program of improvisational training! Whether you want to perform, be better at team work or presentation for your job, or just be more engaged with your friends and family, this is the place to start!

In this course, we’ll jump into the beautiful world of “Yes, And” and study beginning fundamentals like basic games and the advantages of collaborative group work. We’ll enjoy exercises, talk basic theory, dive into basic scenework, push through object & environment, and establish the importance of relationship and truth onstage – and have an incredible amount of fun, getting away with pretending as adults.

Mondays from 6:30-9:00pm
Jun 3, 10, 17, 24, Jul 1, 8

Level 4 Class – Tuesdays

Time to put all that prior work into practice. We’ll learn the structure of basic longforms like Armando (Storyteller), Montage/Commando, Shotgun, Bat, Monoscene, Beer Shark Mice, and WeirdAss. Rather than covering up our lousy scenework with a complex format, we’ll push our good scenework as to not get lost inside the construct of each form.

Not only that, but this level culminates in a Student Show!

Pre-requisite: Level Three, Teacher Approval
Tuesdays from 6:30-9:00pm

Improv FUNdamentals: Virtual Class for Beginners

Improv FUNdamentals: An interactive workshop series!

Mondays – 7/20, 7/27, 8/3, 8/10 7pm – 8:30pm EDT

Cost: All four weeks, $125

We have heard the call – and we are ready! The Nest | CBus Improv Theatre is bringing you a supplemental class – “Improv FUNdamentals: Workshop for Beginners” during this time! This four week series will be held virtually and focus on the positive tenets of improvisational training that zoom-in on connection, listening, collaboration, and PLAY! Especially recommended for those that are brand new to improv (so don’t be scared if you’ve never tried it – this is definitely for you!), and also conducive to students and performers that are in need of exercise and connection at this time with other like-minded adults. We guarantee life-applicable lessons, thought exercises, and most of all – FUN. This virtual class is four weeks long, and is still somehow physical & engaging. For participants ages 18 to 108. 🙂

This class will be online. You will need a smart phone, tablet or computer with microphone and cam to attend. Please download Zoom before the first day of class.

On the place and the instructors:
Global instructors Tara DeFrancisco & Rance Rizzutto (co-founders) have been asked to teach in three outside institutions in Chicago & the UK during this Shelter-in-Place, and are bringing the joy home to share in Columbus to those who need surrounding at this time. DeFrancisco & Rizzutto have taught professionally since 2003, with their performance careers beginning improv back in 1999, going pro as full time performing artists in 2002. They have performed over 6000 shows each in the mainstage and touring companies of iO Chicago, the illustrious Second City, and ComedySportz theatres; They have designed and implemented curriculum for each of those homes and then designed and created the full curriculum for The Nest Theatre. They are known for their residency with Chaos Theory (the Saturday night house team of iO Chicago), work commercially in television/voiceovers, and have been brought as a duo to headline in 24 countries and 80 cities so far with their notorious show, “HERE, the (improvised) Musical”. The Nest Theatre is the only dedicated space to improv (short & long, musical, genre-based), sketch, experimental shows in central Ohio; The Nest & Nest Creative is home to 25 sold out Level One regular courses straight since 2016, and going strong. We have grown rapidly from 24 original students to over 500 performers and students (!) in our home, and 21 teams and shows running regularly in real time. The Nest is moving from their Broad Street location to the home of their dreams in Old North Columbus on High Street this fall. Our community is welcoming, hilarious, and this registered safe space in Ohio is hoping to keep their artistic space afloat during this time. All proceeds from class fees go straight to The CBus Improv notforprofit, and shows are still live through quarantine for reference, all for free on our page, to students and public.
[Editor’s Note: This does not replace our challenging in-person Level 1 Curriculum, BUT anyone that takes this course will receive a significant discount to join our next on site Level 1 once we are permitted to gather.]

Level 2 Class – Mondays

In Level 2, we will begin using the idea of group play. Whether it is via shortform games (playing with pattern, heightening, pouncing on the fun), longform openings (group work, exploration of one theme together), or scenes (game of the scene), we will understand the importance of utilizing our power together and play with rather than against. Character work, both by mirroring and complementing, is also pushed in this level.
