Harold Intensive – Elective
$315 (includes t-shirt and provided lunch/snacks on class days)
10:30am-4:00pm Wed 7/20-Sat 7/23, class show Saturday night)
The Harold is the cornerstone of Chicago Improvisation – even when you aren’t using Harold itself, it touches so much of the ways we move in exceptional longform improv. Originally created as “the unplayable form”, it soon became not only the root of longform, but also commonly used as a writing technique for many television shows and movies. You can study and understand a bit of what the form does in some wonderful books, but to have tangible practice and immersion is the best way to understand the magical and transformative properties of the design, and why it exceptionally tethers a piece together. Nothing is better than doing it with experienced and challenging coaches that push you to understand both the original conceit and the possibilities within the team to make something ethereal, comedic, and beautiful.
On Day 1, you’ll quickly learn the basic mechanics of the Harold, only to put them aside and focus in on your team and the deeper layers of what you’re presenting. We recommend having longform improv experience before taking this class as most of the time will be spent focusing on the form with an assumption that you have a grasp on basic scenework and editing. We strongly recommend taking the Longform Improv Intensive the week before to step into Beginning Harold work – not only for reps, but the chance to be immersed in the work so your head is ready for the in-depth structure and scene study demanded by Harold itself.
About your teachers: Nest Theatre owners Tara DeFrancisco and Rance Rizzutto performed improv for over 15 years in Chicago, and travel the world teaching and performing (at last count pre-pandemic) in 80+ cities through 24+ countries! In addition to founding two beloved and thriving artistic community spaces (The Nest and The Improv Retreat), they tour as headliners all over the world in the hit “HERE the (improvised) Musical”, defrancisCo, and the adored Saturday night house team iO Chicago’s Chaos Theory. They are sought out for their breadth of professional skill, passion + compassion, ethical brave space design of creative homes, and their ability to instill fun into the process while symbiotically challenging students with high-level concepts. In addition to their lauded work *onstage* for iO Theater, Second City, and ComedySportz stages, Tara + Rance created curriculum in the main class levels of those schools, and solely designed the curriculum of the Advanced Summer Intensives at iO Chicago. The Nest Theatre hosts them both the majority of the year – Come get that knowledge straight from the source! (Plus, there just may be a special guest or two.)
