And now, for incredible news we can finally share… The Nest Theatre steps into even bigger possibilities and joyously announces, due to incredible growth and support after a horrendous nightmare, we now have our own amazing space.
Our NEW Theatre is coming! The info below is mostly for those who have been going to The Nest and are wondering what happened. For those, an answer, if you’re new here you’ll get a little history!
Tara DeFrancisco & Rance Rizzutto now have the rights to the first dedicated improv space in Central Ohio, a 4800 sq ft complex in booming downtown/Franklinton, 1/2 mile west of COSI & Scioto Mile. The complex will host an 80+ person mainstage plus 60 additional, ADA equipped 1st floor, a lobby with beer/wine service, a patio, a full liquor license and full service, kitchen for eventual use, 24 parking spots, state of the art booth and tech, and small classroom on 2nd level. Able to host events, private parties, seminars, and ceremonies – this place will be the actual Cheers we dreamt of supported fully by the City of Columbus, incredibly right off the 315 exit.
Our goal all along was to make not just a theatre, but a home for improv, sketch, and experimental theatre in Ohio. We started that journey in early 2016. We found a space that was great…and the owner put his nephew in charge and the rent promptly tripled. Then we found another space and put a deposit down…and the city wouldn’t let the owner get the permits they needed. Next up, our first official home on Cherry St. It had an industrial feel and it had potential. We knew that we wanted a bar and that meant some big changes, construction-wise. Right as we started that process, the fire department realized the building hadn’t been checked since the 50’s. Due to structural things like no fire escapes on the upper floors, they shut the whole building down.
We temporarily moved to a space on Lynn that our landlord also owned…which wasn’t properly coded for a theatre. With Lynn off the table and a definite “no” on getting Cherry up to snuff, we hunted again.
You know what they say, the fifth time is a charm (someone says that, right?)! We found a space ready to be all of the things we wanted our theatre to be: a bar, a stage, a classroom, multiple bathrooms, actual heat and AC, parking, a place to put a dumpster. It even has a kitchen!
If you’ve heard of/been to Colombini’s, that’s our new space! The Colombini’s were ready to retire and the timing was right!
Our flagship shows of STORYTELLER, HERE the (improvised) Musical, and ComedySportz Columbus will anchor mainstage, as well as additional Columbus Classic / Cagematch / Dual Duel nights, with additional plans by 2018 for an original Second City-like sketch revue, a harold team, a full cast improvised musical, more indie experimental & genre teams, as well as trivia & game nights. Our 4 level program successfully continues, and summer camp for kids & adult intensives will begin.
We’ll be getting the space ready for the theatre…part of this is on the city and the normal permit process. While all of that stuff is going on, we’re planning on some Soft Opening shows for the new space, so keep an eye out!
We’re so excited for this next step and hope that you’ll come join us along the way!!
A nightmare gave us the chance to leap, so, we leap and improvise the chance to fly. We keep loving, we keep going, we keep playing. All are welcome and art will win. Columbus, here we grow.
